Refuge Wednesday

It's September and normally the full refuge is open to traffic and dogs. So off Molly and I went to see what we could see.
Not a lot of activity past the gate - a few herons, pelicans, a lot of Grebes, and miscellaneous ducks and a Harrier. The Sandhill Cranes were in their spot just before the offices, this time out in the water hunting. Lots of Snowy Egrets and one Great Egret. The terns, stilts and avocets are still out in abundance...not time for their departure yet.

Snowy - white and green make a great composition.

Juvenile Cooper's Hawk - not a usual refuge visitor but one hangs around the various trees.

Carp bones - The carp grow quite big in the shallow water and are poisoned each fall and used to feed the birds and eagles. Here's the remnants..

Clark's Grebe with juvenile. - Note open mouth!

These guys are big..

The lack of water made these two mud photos kind of cool..

I am a sucker for the solitary plants...

Snowy checking us out through the grasses.

Molly waiting to see if I am coming.

Western  Grebes - note the juvenile with the open mouth - again!
