Murphy has joined the ranks of dogs needing surgery for a ruptured ACL. In the dog world, it is called a TLPO procedure - "Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy". He had his surgery Thursday and is recovering well.
The hardest part of it is that we do not understand him - and he does try to communicate. Rapid panting seems to be tied to pain and often ceases sometime after a pain pill has been given. It is also tied to stress, as we discovered again when we took him to the vet this afternoon - he did not want to go back into that building!!
According to the vet and the surgeon, the most important item is to keep him from licking the wound and getting it infected. We use the collar when we cannot be with him, and admonishments which seem to work when we are with him. A long, slow road to recovery of about 13 to 17 weeks.
Here's a couple of photos of him - the one with the collar is inside on his bed, and the outside one is on the front lawn where he can watch the neighborhood as he often does. Nurse Diana is doing an excellent job of taking care of her patient.

Poor baby. That's a long recovery. will he need physical therapy during that time?
He might, we are hoping to avoid that. But we have a couple of good referrals if we need to.
