The process of decay starts in many ways - for the leaf it was a time of nature for the tree to release its hold; for the coyote it was a larger predator that left a thoroughly cleaned skull behind (probably with a little help from bugs!).
The skull sinks deeper into the afterlife while the leaf has a bit more time to scoot across the surface of the water at the beck and call of the wind; eventually sinking and decomposing.
Life is fun!
